Skåne län

County of Skåne – a county in southern Götaland. The county constitutes the province of Skåne plus a small part of Halland. Skåne is by size the third largest county in Sweden.

The county is subdivided into 33 local administrative districts – kommun (municipalities). The county capital is Malmö.

Major cities are Malmö, Hälsingborg, Kristianstad and Lund.

The County of Skåne includes Kristianstad University, Lund University, Malmö University, and World Maritime University.

Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is only a thirty-minute train ride away. Copenhagen Airport is Scandinavia’s largest airport and transports over 21 million passengers every year. It can be reached from all bigger cities. Once at Copenhagen Airport, buy a train ticket that takes you over the Öresund Bridge to Sweden. Get off at Malmö, Helsingborg, Lund, or whichever city you prefer.

Travelling on trains and buses in Skåne

Skånetrafiken is the name of the public transportation system in Skåne. It includes buses and trains in all of Skåne and Malmö as well as trains to Denmark and buses and trains across the county lines all the way to Göteborg and Alvesta.

The Skånetrafiken app is the easiest way to travel on buses and trains throughout Skåne. Just download the app from Google Play or App Store.

If you buy your ticket via the app, do not forget to activate your ticket before getting on board. The green city buses will easily take you around the city. The yellow region buses take you to the towns and countryside.

You can buy a single ticket (1 hour), as well as tickets for 24h and 30 days.

The easiest way to buy a ticket without using the app is by debit card when you travel. Buy your ticket at a vending machine, on board the regional buses, at customer centres or from agents. If your bank card shows the contactless payment symbol, you can use it to pay directly on the bus. You will pay an adult rate fare. Please note that overseas currency transactions may apply.

Pay with debit cards or cash. You can also use a VISA, VISA Electron, MasterCard, Maestro or American Express credit card.

You can buy tickets for Skåne, to Denmark and surrounding counties from the customer service centre. There are four customer service centres; Malmö Central Station, Lund Station, Knutpunkten in Helsingborg and Kristianstad Station.

If you want to discover the whole Öresund region i.e. both parts of Denmark and Skåne, you can buy Skånetrafiken’s “Öresund runt” card. This card is valid on Skånetrafiken’s Öresundståg, Pågatåg, city buses and regional buses on the Swedish side of the Sound. In Denmark, it is valid on the coastal line with Öresundståg, the Copenhagen Metro and Movia’s buses in Copenhagen, and on Scandline’s ferries between Helsingborg and Helsingør.

You have to buy a train ticket before the ride and enter the train or you can be fined. If you feel uncertain about which train to take or how to buy a ticket, do not hesitate to ask the staff at the service desk.

It is easy to catch a bus to Lund from many of the largest cities in the Nordic region. Some operators with routes to Lund are Netbus/Bus4You and Flixbus.
